How to get ahead with your PR in 2024

You’ve been considering PR for a long time but haven’t yet taken the plunge.   There are a number of reasons that as a small business you might be reticent about taking that next step.  These could include lack of time, limited budget, a fear that nobody will care about what you have to say, no idea what your story is, you don’t feel you can make an impact with the media when put next to your competitors and so much more.

What can you do?

Let 2024 be the year that you start believing in your business, your ability, your story and stop procrastinating on your PR.  Things don’t have to be complicated.  Here are some simple PR tips that you can start with a minimal effort

Uncover your story

Everybody has a story.  Every individual, every business as a tale of something that happened that made them what they are today.  A story they tell that makes others go “oh really, that’s interesting”.  To get started on your PR find out what your story is.  If you don’t know how to find your story it’s quite simple, here are few suggestions as to how to uncover it.

  • Note down key moments of your life/business journey

  • Talk to an inquisitive friend or family member (somebody who asks loads of questions)

  • Book a Dig Deeper session with me and I’ll ask all the questions and no doubt find more than one story

Utilise social media

PR isn’t all about media coverage, it’s all the ways you communicate with the people who might be interested in what you have to offer.  With this in mind make the most of social media to share your story, opinions and knowledge.#

Look for influencers

Talking about social media are there any influencers that are related to your industry that you could work with?  There are a number of Facebook groups that feature influencers looking for collaborations.  Some influencers will charge a fee but there are plenty of smaller, niche influencers who collaborate in return for product.

Create a media kit

As a business or organisation, it is really important to have all your ducks in a row before you start approaching the media and this is where your press kit/media pack comes into play. This kit can play an important part in engaging with the media and letting them know what you and your business are all about. It should provide them with all the key facts and messages in an easy to digest way.

Your media kit will help you long term as it forces you to look at your messaging and how to get things across in an impactful, yet concise manner.

If this all sounds a little overwhelming and you’re wondering where to even begin, have no fear I’ve written in the past about how to create a media kit.

Sign up to a media request source

Journalists are always looking for stories and people to comment.  So you need to make sure you’re getting their requests.  One place to look for free is X using the hashtag #journorequest  or to get requests direct to your inbox sign up to Pressplugs or Editorielle and you will get requests related to your industry through every day.

There are lots of other ways that you can gain  publicity and these are just a few low cost ways to get you started.  Good luck with your PR in 2024.
